Point Source wins Best New Theatre Product Award for CO2 Confidence™ Collection
FOH Magazine has recognized Point Source Audio’s CO2 Confidence Collection as Best New Theatre Product in its Gold Star Product Awards
Petaluma, CA — The power of Point Source Audio’s solutions for theater has been recognized by Front of House Magazine with a Gold Star Product Award for the CO2 Confidence Collection. The expanded collection of dual-element mics was named Best New Theater Product at the 2020 NAMM Show.
The CO2 Confidence Collection wireless microphones all have dual elements, each measuring a tiny 3mm, that offers built-in redundancy. The CO2 mics integrate two of the company’s important first-to-market features in miniature microphones: IP 57 waterproof rating, and the “unbreakable” headset boom bendable to 360° to bolster durability.
Double Miking Ease for Theatres
With Point Source Audio’s products in use on Broadway and the West End on theater productions including Hamilton and To Kill a Mockingbird, and venues including the San Francisco Opera, Lincoln Center, and Berklee College of Music, it is no surprise that theater companies have quickly responded to the CO2 Confidence mics. When it comes to needing confidence in having a back-up mic there are two theatre environments — in the round and outdoor theatres — that can be challenging but the Confidence mics have proven to be the right solution.
Sound Designer Daryl Bornstein is someone who has seen the advantages of the Confidence Collection during the in the round production of Jersey Boys at the North Shore Music Theater (NSMT) in Beverly, MA. “The mics saved a tremendous amount of time, were easy to adjust and secure to the actors’ heads. We will be expanding our inventory of Point Source Audio elements in the future to include lavs, single element booms, and additional dual-element booms.”
“I am beyond pleased with the addition of Point Source microphones to our production,” adds Joseph Reynolds, A1, The Lost Colony who has found the water-resistant capabilities particularly useful. “The water-resistant elements are paramount to an outdoor period drama, where the perspiration of the talent could compromise mic functionality. We were also excited to see a product that made the application of the dual elements simpler. By combining those wire runs and keeping things as tidy as possible. That’s been a great benefit to the production.”
How the CO2 Double Mic Works
The Confidence microphones feature precisely matched elements to a near-identical ±0.5 dB difference. Whereas a usual method of redundant miking can be achieved with two separate microphones, audio between them may vary due to differences between the microphone brand, the microphones’ age, as well as variances in the specifications. The Confidence Collection solves this challenge with elements that are factory matched in frequency and sensitivity—so when a vital backup is initiated, any difference in audio performance is nearly undetectable.
The backup element is fashioned to the existing mic in tandem and where the independent and continuous wire paths are integrated into a singular wire jacket giving theatre technicians a clean alternative to cumbersome cable dressing. The mic cable splits approximately nine inches above connection to the body-packs to allow ample room for separation of the transmitters.
“We are thrilled to have won a FOH Gold Star Product Award for our CO2 Confidence Collection,” said Yvonne Ho, Point Source Audio’s vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Since their release last year, the Confidence Collection has been embraced by theater professionals around the world as a robust yet discreet solution that delivers pristine audio quality for every performance. Being named Best New Theatre Product validates the trust that audio technicians continue to place in our products.”
